I was actually shocked when I was given a notice from the Information Development Authority in Singapore that I actually needed a license to have my servers Co-Located as it’s classified as a Store And Forward Value Added Network (SAF VAN) as I could use them for reselling purposes.
What?! I thought they gotten rid of that licensing since the Bulletin Boards Systems went down in Singapore in 1998 as the last of the dinosaurs died off in 2000. I know because I have to take a frigging Amateur Radio License Operator License and learn Morse Codes all before I can continue operate my license as a BBS. BBS.NU aka GizmoNET Intraweb BBS was licensed under call sign 9VB-482D by then the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore TAS. 9V Being the Singapore Identification code (9M-2 for Malaysia alongside 9M-6 (sabah) 9M-8 Sarawak , now with 9W-2 for class B Malaysia)
We know what and who used the licenses as these call signs are permanent to the person or station. In the times , AA - BB -CCC is the format, being N1 being used for American Small Aircrafts , like wise, 9V-B-428D being Singapore B Operator ID 428 Class D type Station. This station and operator identification system was part of the CCITT (now International Telecommunications Union or ITU) numbering unit which says, First 2 are country, followed by alphabets for aircrafts and stations or number for person operating that station then by alphabets or alpha-numeric.
Mine was easy, Singapore Station B VAN Operator (A used for ISPs and authorities), followed by a subnet number and a check alphabet because I am both a station and a personal network operator.
Which comes back to my point, why the need to do that again now, with the presence of the Internet? You mean I have to get a frigging test because I am using a co-location without the need of leased lines or such? I thought Singapore was doing away with all these fraudster ways, by only licensing because YOU MAKE MONEY RESELLING like Prepaid cards, Games Networks or if I am an ISP which is easier to get nowadays, but having my own server?? I can run an ISP or VOIP network from my home as an office and so for 3 years, but I need a license for putting it on a datacenter?
Oh well, the requirements….Malaysia is worse off. More stuff to fill…
Oooh well, I might as well stick to 4U-X1C code instead.
